A domain name is in effect the name of your website, and therefore the basis of your presence on the Internet. Domain names are unique and must therefore be registered. A domain name consists of a name (such as your company name) and an extension. The extension determines either the purpose or geographical relationship of the domain name although this is not always strictly adhered to. For instance .com relates to worldwide commercial domain names and is by far the most popular and valuable extension. Other domains such as .de (Germany) and .co.uk (United Kingdom) in broad terms determine the geographical scope to which the domain name and underlying company relates.
